K-pop agency ADOR has filed for an injunction against the five members of the girl group NewJeans, who are currently in the midst of an exclusive contract dispute, to prevent them from independently entering into advertising contracts.
On January 13, ADOR announced that it had submitted an injunction request to the Seoul Central District Court, aimed at preventing NewJeans members from engaging in independent advertising contracts without the agency's approval. This request includes the goal of affirming ADOR's position as the managing agency until the court rules on the lawsuit filed on December 3, 2024, regarding the validity of the exclusive contract.
ADOR explained, "This injunction is meant to prevent the NewJeans members from continuing to engage in independent advertising contracts without ADOR's consent while recognizing ADOR's status as the managing agency until the first-instance ruling on the exclusive contract validity is issued."
The members of NewJeans announced the termination of their exclusive contract with ADOR, citing the agency’s failure to meet its obligations since November 29 of last year. However, ADOR maintains that the contract remains valid and has filed a lawsuit to confirm its validity.
ADOR further explained, "The NewJeans members, who unilaterally declared the termination of their exclusive contracts, have continued to attempt to engage with advertisers and enter into contracts independently." This action, ADOR claims, is causing confusion and potential harm to third parties such as advertisers.
In the injunction request, ADOR also highlighted concerns within the industry, stating that allowing a precedent for independent entertainment activities without following legal procedures could undermine investor confidence in the entertainment industry, destabilizing the foundation of the K-pop industry.
The agency reassured that it has consistently supported NewJeans' activities, including providing necessary personnel and resources, and will continue to do so. ADOR also mentioned that it has received proposals for advertisements and events, and that plans for this year’s activities, including an album release and fan meetings, have already been completed.
