Following the arrest of President Yoon Suk-yeol on charges of being the leader of a rebellion, singer IU has become the target of online harassment.
On January 16, a variety of negative comments flooded IU's social media accounts. Comments such as "The nation's little sister stabbed us in the back," "Left-wing IU," and "Are you feeling better now?" were among the posts. These comments are believed to have been made by far-right users who oppose President Yoon's arrest and impeachment.
Previously, IU had shown her support for a rally calling for President Yoon’s impeachment, which took place on December 14. She pre-paid for food and beverages for attendees at cafes around Yeouido, including 100 loaves of bread, 100 drinks, 100 bowls of soup, and other items to provide for the participants.
Upon hearing about this, many of IU's fans have come to her defense, posting comments like "Don't mind the hate," and "Don't mess with IU." However, the situation has continued to generate significant attention with ongoing comments.
Meanwhile, President Yoon was arrested on the morning of January 15 by the High-ranking Officials Crime Investigation Agency (HCIA) and the police. This marks his first arrest since the December 12-3 emergency martial law situation, and reports suggest that he exercised his right to remain silent throughout the investigation.
