On the 15th, President Yoon Suk-yeol was arrested, marking the first time in South Korea's history that a sitting president has been detained. In response, major broadcasters such as KBS, MBC, and Channel A have made urgent schedule changes, canceling large-scale programs to focus on live news coverage of the arrest.
KBS 1TV replaced its entire schedule with news specials for the day. Popular programs, including Human Theater, Morning Yard, Animal Kingdom, 6 o'clock Our Town, and The Secret of Life and Death, were all canceled. Particularly, Our House Golden Calf and Marry Me, Frog were also called off. KBS has been broadcasting in-depth coverage, focusing on the details of President Yoon's arrest and analyzing the developments following the December 3 Emergency Martial Law.
SBS mostly maintained its regular programming but expanded the airtime for SBS 8 News, which caused the flagship variety show Goal Strikes Her to be delayed by 10 minutes, airing at 9:10 PM instead. Rebroadcast programs were canceled and replaced with news specials. The episode of Goal Strikes Her was originally scheduled to feature the opening match of the G-League between FC Top Girl and FC Actionista. An SBS representative confirmed that the news special replaced the rebroadcast of programs following the delay of Goal Strikes Her.
MBC also adjusted its schedule, with the scheduled episode of Kind-hearted Captain being canceled and replaced by a special edition of MBC News Desk. Earlier in the morning, Live Today was also replaced by news coverage.
Channel A's popular variety show Today's Man Life - Groom School was also canceled.
In all cases, broadcasters are focusing on the breaking news of President Yoon's arrest with extensive coverage of the event.
Meanwhile, President Yoon faced charges of treason related to the declaration of emergency martial law on December 3rd last year. He was arrested at 10:33 AM on the same day by the Corruption Investigation Office for High-ranking Officials (CIO). This unprecedented event has created a massive impact, both in South Korea and internationally, prompting broadcasters to urgently reassign their schedules to cover this historic event.
